Love to camp, but can’t quite leave the running water behind?
There is a place in southwest Virginia that you can do just that – at Backcountry Lodges.
They have two locations, a luxury cabin at historic Whites Mill in Abingdon, and the other in Damascus at Wilderness Lodges.

Whites’ Mill location is a recently renovated and refurnished cabin that sleeps up to 6 people. How close is it to the mill? A ‘stone’s throw’, if you will, merely 100 feet away from the front porch.
Whites’ Mill is also close enough to the town of Abingdon to get out and about and enjoy what the town has to offer: antiques, eateries and historic venues. Or you might choose to stay put in the cabin and enjoy a warm fireplace, full kitchen and a full view of the mill and meadow below.

While pets and smoking are not allowed at the White’s Mill location, the Wilderness Lodges in Widener Valley are more of an out-of-doors experience. “We’ve been known to even dog-sit while people are riding the trail” tells owner Tracy Mitchell.
You can rest comfortably in their unique lodges build of canvas canopied by a full-roofed structure – blending “19th century safari” with modern comforts of electricity (and running water).
Backcountry also welcomes large groups to their outdoor experience, and hosts primitive camping for those who wish to bring their own tents.
The lodges also have facilities for up to 6 guests’ horses nightly. But you don’t have to leave the bikes at home, either. There are also several bike trails surrounding the White’s Mill location: Fall Hill Trail, Toole – Garrett Creek Trail and Chip Ridge Trail where you can ride and take in the charming Virginia landscape. Also quite a few wildlife trails and biking trails surround the Wilderness Lodges too: Iron Mountain Trail, Saw Mill Trail, Mount Rogers, Clinch Mountain Trail and Daniel Boone Trail are just to name a few. You can find more of the trails available online at www.virginiabackcountry.com.
So whether your visit requires roughing it or going out with luxury, Backcountry Lodges can offer you both without having to leave behind the comforts of home.
